Bright, fresh, coolish-climate chardonnay with white peach, nectarine, saline-mineral, ginger and subtle nutty yeast lees flavours. A taut, focused, high-energy wine that offers good drinking now but no rush. Enjoy 2020–2025

 

2019 Upper Reaches Merlot        93 points        4 stars

From an estate vineyard on the upper reaches of the Ngaruroro River. Good concentration of ripe plum, blackberry, cassis and spicy oak flavours. A supple, appealing wine with bright, focused flavours. Approachable now but better in another 2-3 years. Drink 2020–2026

 

2019 Monowai Sauvignon Blanc        93 points        4 stars

Attractive and quite textural sauvignon blanc in a truly cool-climate style with citrus, lime, passionfruit and tropical fruit flavours. Perfectly balanced with a backbone of fruity acidity that effectively masks the wine's sweetness. Drink 2020–2024

 

2019 Monowai Pinot Gris         91 points        4 stars    

Delicately aromatic pinot gris with classic pear, tree fruit and ripe apple flavours. Made in a barely off-dry style, with just a hint of sweetness. Appealing purity and freshness with a lingering, mouth-watering finish. Enjoy 2020–2023

A medium-bodied, peaches-and-cream chardonnay with stone fruit, vanilla and citrus fruit flavours together with a creamy texture. It's a fruit-forward wine, with very subtle nutty lees characters. A fresh, appealing wine in a drink-me style. Enjoy 2020–2024

2017 Monowai Upper Reaches Chardonnay 91 Points 

A big smoky, toasty bouquet of Chardonnay with aromas of wood and spices, brazil nut and roasted yellow fruits, clove and vanilla, burnt butter and lees. Full-bodied, creamy and rich with flavours of roasted nuts, vanilla, spices and stone fruits. Nice acid line, balanced and ready. Will continue to age. best from today and through 2024.

2017 Monowai Merlot 90 Points

Refreshing lifted bouquet of Merlot - plums and cherries, fruit compote, dark spices of oak and dry stone earthy tones. Fruity, earthy, moderate weight and dry on the palate. Flavours mirror the nose, youthful textures with medium+ acidity and moderate tannins, well made with moderate finish. Still developing so no rush on drinking. Best from late 2020 through 2024.

Bright, fresh and fruity bouquet of Pinot Noir. Aromas and flavours of dark cherry, plum and toasty wood - cinnamon, cedar and dark roses. Dry on the palate with a youthful attack - dusty tannins and brown spices, some plum and dark red stone fruit flavours, contrasting acidity, medium length, balanced and youthful. Okay to cellar or drink. best from mid 2020 through 2023.

Quite an intense but rather closed Merlot with strong plum, oak and savoury, toasty, coffee and malty characters. Fairly dense red with an almost chewy texture. Perhaps a little closed right now but showing potential.
