Jun 10, 2022Monowai was established by New Zealand winemaker, Emma Lowe, and Chilean vineyard manager, Marcelo Nunez in the Hawke’s Bay sub-region of Crownthorpe, a cool, high altitude area. Emma has made wine in Australia, Switzerland, South Africa, France, Chile and New Zealand while Marcelo has been involved in viticulture and winemaking in both Chile and New Zealand.
The name “Monowai” refers to the single expanse of ocean that separates their homelands.
Monowai’s 22 ha vineyard is planted in pinot noir, pinot gris, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and merlot. Crownthorpe’s free-draining stony soils produce distinctively delicate and often fragrant wines that offer charm and purity.
Their winery, which was completed in 2005, includes four separate temperature-controlled barrel rooms and is automated to give Emma maximum control with a minimal amount of labour.
